Could Tony Romo Leave Dallas Cowboys for Miami Dolphins?
A month ago nobody mentioned the name Tony Romo at all. Now just days from NFL draft, and whispers have started about the Dallas Cowboys looking for his successor. Could the quarterback-starved Miami Dolphins be a perfect fit?
Dallas has good reasons to end Romo era with NFL Draft move
Everyone knows the Romo story. Though he's one of the more productive passers in the league since he took over the Dallas Cowboys in 2006, he can't win in big moment. Never was that more clear than his two humiliating losses to the eventual champion New York Giants last season. Winning either game would have put Dallas in the playoffs and knocked the Giants out. Instead Cowboys fans got to spend another year watching their hated rivals raise a Lombardi trophy. The team sits at a crossroads. Their roster has aged at some bad spots, and no one need look further than the quarterback. Tony Romo is 33 years old. Injuries have piled up in recent seasons, and it's fair to wonder if Dallas might select a quarterback in the draft to eventually replace him. The only issue is they are not on the board until the 14th pick. By then the top three quarterbacks won't be available. So is there a way for the Cowboys to find a young arm without resorting to the later rounds?
Stephen Ross and Dolphins could offer Ryan Tannehill in exchange for Romo
No team needs star power at quarterback more than the Miami Dolphins. Their fan attendance has slipped steadily for years ever since Dan Marino retired and the failure to find a replacement has become a running joke. After failing to sign Peyton Manning in the offseason, most experts think the Dolphins and owner Stephen Ross will use pick #8 in the NFL draft to select Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Outside of Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, Tannehill is the next best available. His athletic gifts are well-documented, and being from a Texas college could become a perfect fit for Dallas. A trade with Miami could send Romo to a new team with a fresh start, away from the blistering Dallas media, while the Cowboys get their young arm and have Kyle Orton as a stopgap until he's ready. On paper the trade sounds logical. Business issues aside, the biggest obstacle is how many draft picks go into the trade and whether they would take an older but proven arm over a "bust possibility", as some draft experts are calling Tannehill.
The beauty of the NFL draft is that once a team is on the clock, nobody knows what will happen. Tony Romo is still the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys until news breaks differently. Regardless, Stephen Ross and the Miami Dolphins claim they want a quarterback, and if Ryan Tannehill isn't their man, they might have an escape route through Texas.
